“I asked the Prophet, peace be upon him, ‘Which deed is the most beloved to Allah?’ He replied, ‘To offer the prayers at their proper times.’ I asked, ‘Then what?’ He replied, ‘To be good and dutiful to your parents.’”
—Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (Bukhari)
“In this world, there is a paradise. Whoever does not enter it will not enter the Paradise of the Hereafter.”
PROLOGUE: Maryam’s Thoughts
Have you ever asked yourself “Who am I?” or “What am I doing with my life?”
Yeah, I know they’re boring questions, the kind your parents always want you to “ponder.” And they’re typical, I know. Too typical. And hey, I’ll be honest, I didn’t think about them much a few years ago.
Okay, but seriously, I think about this stuff more than I used to. Sometimes when I get all sad with how my life is, I say to myself, “Girl, do you even know who you are?” But when the question really gets to me, you know, when I can’t figure out the “right” answer, I just shrug it off. I mean, I feel stupid talking to myself like that, even if it’s just in my head.
But I can’t help it. The question really bothers me.
And I think it’s all because of Samira.
But if she’d ever catch me worrying over these silly “questions of life,” she’d say, “Dummy, why are you stressing so much? The night is young, and we are young, so let’s have some fun!”
Even now, I can’t help laughing to myself when I think of her.
If anybody else had called me “Dummy,” I wouldn’t have liked it one bit. But with her…It was different.
Well, honestly, when she first said it, I was annoyed. But I eventually came to love it.
Just like I eventually came to love Samira.
You see, Samira’s my best friend. …Well, she used to be.
Oh, Samira, how I hope to get back in touch.
I miss you soooooo much!
